Pandemic leads to Martin’s Mercantile, an artisan market in Akron

The market at 62 Main St. rents floor, wall and shelving space to vendors and artisans.

AKRON, N.Y. — Martin’s Mercantile, an artisan market and co-op shop, opened this month in Akron, thanks to the pandemic.

Ginger Martin and her husband have owned 58 and 62 Main St. in Akron for more than 20 years, and as Akron Pharmacy and Gift Shop moved out this year, they considered selling the properties. But their real estate agent advised them that the pandemic wasn’t a good time to sell.

Prior to owning the buildings, Martin and her sister started Sunday’s Child, a children’s consignment shop, in the same structure. And in the last few years, she and her husband had talked about getting back into retail.
