Gander Mountain store to become self storage

CEO Jay Wegman said the project is the latest joint venture between his company and Columbia Pacific Advisors LLC, based in Seattle.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Wegman Cos. Inc. – not connected to the supermarket chain – has targeted a former Tonawanda retail outlet for its first Buffalo Niagara project.

The Rochester company plans to buy and renovate the former Gander Mountain store at 880 Young St. into a climate-controlled self-storage facility.

Plans approved by the Town of Tonawanda Planning Board on April 6 show the 72,764-square-foot store would be converted into 450 interior-storage units. Seven exterior, climate-controlled units are planned for heavy-equipment storage along with a secure parking area for RVs, boats and antique cars.
