Two organizations that care for stray and surrendered animals are getting grants to help them improve their facilities and provide a better quality of life for the animals in their care.

ALBANY, NY-- State money is on the way to fund some badly needed improvements at the Cattaraugus Co. SPCA in Olean.

Governor Cuomo's office announced Tuesday 14 animal shelters and humane societies across the state are getting the money through the NYS Companion Animal Capital Fund. It's the first state-funded program in the niaton to support critical improvement projects at shelters across the state.

The SPCA in Cattauaugus Co. is getting $164,436 to renovate the shelter. Planned fixes include the installation of a new heating/cooling system for better ventilation and weatherization. The shelter will also use some of the cash to create a more welcoming adoption environment.

In addition, the Town of West Seneca Municipal shelter is getting $119,775 for work that includes covering kennels and replacing the roof.

Grants were awarded based on need and the readiness of projects.
