Buffalo Earth Week goes virtual with online challenges

The City of Buffalo rolls out a week of virtual activities and challenges to celebrate Earth Week at home.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Earth Day is usually an all-month celebration for the City of Buffalo, with the department of recycling and refuse hosting environmentally-focused events over several weeks.

This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration is going virtual. They're presenting a series a virtual challenges for families to complete at home and share online.

The challenge for Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, is to honor the earth by planting a tree in the garden, picking up litter or just making a pledge to create less waste. Families are encouraged to share their pictures and videos on social media and mention the "Buffalo Recycles" accounts. Everyone who participates will get a City of Buffalo reusable tote.

Challenges for the rest of the week include:

  • Thursday, April 24: Learn how to fix a lamp
  • Friday, April 25: Show how you're recycling at home
