Sweet and Unique Eats from KupKates Bakery

KupKates Bakery has been serving up sweet treats from South Buffalo for seven years.

"We came up with a play on words," Kathleen Cunningham, owner of KupKates, explained. "Instead of 'cupcakes'...some people call me Kate, so we came up with KupKates."

Since KupKates opened, they have been cooking up classic cupcakes and not so classic cupcakes.

"There wasn't any bakeries out here," Cunningham explained. "And there was no bakery that was doing scratch made and the cupcake craze was just getting big."

They have red velvet, carrot or chocolate peanut butter cupcakes. But then there are seasonal specials, too. This winter they channeled holiday drinks. Imagine warm beverages in cupcake form.

"We did an eggnog cupcake with an eggnog buttercream with nutmeg and a little bit of rum," Cunningham said. "And we also make a hot cocoa cupcake which has a chocolate mousse inside with a little bit of Baileys because you have to have Baileys for the winter!"

Buffalo runs strong through the place, sourcing many of their ingredients from right here at home. They have been known to make a sponge candy cupcake with sponge from Park Edge Sweetshoppe. They have made a Buffalo wing cupcake, too.

"We do a lot of the Buffalo themed things," Cunningham explained. "As you see we put Buffalos on top of our cupcakes a lot and oh, we did a chicken wing cupcake for Superbowl a couple years ago. It sounds gross but it wasn't bad."

KupKates is only open one day a week on Sundays. The rest of the week you will find them busy filling special orders for weddings, birthdays, showers or graduations.

And they are always brainstorming for their next cupcake to come.
