BUFFALO - If August seemed warm to you, you are absolutely right. August 2016 will go down as the warmest August on record here in Buffalo with an average temperature of 75.5°. That temperature is derived from combining all of the high temperatures and low temperatures for the month and then getting an average temperature. The old record was 75.2° set in 1947. Interestingly, there were no record high temperatures for the entire month. The record was broken with consistently warm temperatures virtually every day.
Only one day of the entire month had a temperature that was below normal for the date. Also there were only two days with a high temperature below 80°.
One of the major reasons for the record setting month was our overnight lows. The overnight low average for the month was 66.5° and that sets a record itself. Never has our average low temperature been so warm in the month of August. Eleven nights in the month failed to drop below 70° which is truly remarkable.
On a positive note, August ended up being wetter than normal, which makes August the first month since February where rain fall totals were higher than average.
