BUFFALO, NY-The New York State Department of Transportation announced Friday a series of maintenance projects to rehabilitate the bridge deck along with structural steel repairs of the Buffalo Skyway.
The NYSDOT says the combination of three maintenance and rehabilitation projects will help with the continued safety on the Skyway. The three projects include a netting system that will be installed, wrapping the bridge fascia, and go around the bridge joints of the structure in the Canalside area. The netting will stretch 1,400 feet from the Buffalo River to Commercial Street. The project will begin Monday.
Next spring, a bid will be put out for the project to repair the entire bridge fascia.
The final project will be to rehabilitate the Skyway bridge deck. The bid for the project will begin next winter. It will include structural steel repairs and bridge joint replacements.
With the upcoming netting project to begin on Monday, October 10, lane closures will begin. The lane closures are expected to be from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the outbound Skyway, and 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the inbound Skyway, between interstate 190 and the Outer Harbor Drive exit. The work is expected to take six weeks.
