ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel acknowledges he has plenty to prove in showing he's capable of being a bona fide starter entering his second NFL season.

There were questions last year regarding injuries and inconsistencies. Another reminder of how far Manuel has to go came this week when he was bypassed in a player vote for one of six captain designations.

That's understandable, Manuel said Wednesday in noting his own votes were restricted to established veterans.

Manuel says he's not yet "earned his stripes," which is something the former first-round draft pick is motivated to do this year.

The process resumes Sunday when the Bills open at Chicago.

Manuel is coming off a rookie season in which he went 4-6 and was sidelined by three separate knee injuries.
