Buffalo, N.Y. (May 26, 2014) – The West Side Rowing Club held its annual Memorial Day Fontana All-High Regatta today at the West Side Campus. Winning teams in each event were awarded medals. Each race has a weighted point system, with Canisius High School as the overall men's winner for the day and West Side Rowing Club Juniors winning the overall women's title for the day.
Competing teams came from all across Buffalo for the Regatta. West Side Campus scholastic and club teams including the West Side Juniors, City Honors School, Mount St. Mary Academy, Nardin Academy, and St. Josephs Collegiate Institute were among the competitors.
West Side Rowing Club Campus teams claimed 11 medals on the day, including Mount St. Mary's winning the Girls Junior 8+ and Girl's Freshman 4+ B, Nardin winning the Girls Freshman 8+ and sharing with St. Joes the Boys and Girls Mixed Novice 8+ medal, Nichols winning the Girls Freshman 4+, Boys Junior 4+, and Girls Junior 4+, St. Joes winning the Boys Junior 8+, and West Side Juniors winning the Girls Lightweight 4+, the Girls Senior 4+, and the Girls Senior 8+.
Rowing for Mount St. Mary's in the Girls Junior 8+ were Maria Mankwoski, Olivia Cianchetti, Hannah Lawrence, Sophie Carroll, Theresa Rusch, Molly Frauenheim, Alissa Miller-Gonzalez, Maureen Frauenheim, and coxswain Emily Ngo. In their Girls Freshman 4+ B were Gabby Teoli, Lawrence, Carroll, Miller-Gonzalez, and coxswain Ngo.
In the Nardin Girls Freshman 8+ were Janelle Benton, Addie Mahoney, Rachel Kolveck, Xiushi Zhao, Alex Holt, Vivien Pierce, Jessica Schmitt, Cameryn Orlowski, and coxswain Courtney Flynn. In the Boys and Girls Novice Mixed 8 for Nardin were Elizabeth Kron, Jacqueline Richardson, and Catie Miskuly.
Rowing for Nichols in the Girls Freshman 4+ A were Victoria Krentz, Kayla Sienkiewicz, Gracie Newman, Samantha Lazar, and coxswain Hailey Miller. In the Boys Junior 4+ were Matt O'Connor, Brady Stevens, Will Kinsman, Sean Munn, and coxswain Christie Hartman. In the Girls Junior 4+ were Brigitte Vossler, Rachel Larson, Eliza Oak, Chloe Keating, and coxswain Kelly McNamara.
In the Boys and Girls Novice Mixed 8+ for St. Joes were Alex Emke, Nick Long, Max Stanley, Ben Verrico, Matt Duke, and coxswain John Warthling. In the Boys Junior 8+ were John Collins, Eric Szafranski, Max Cambria, Eric Seaner, Steve Bunce, August Cudeck, Nick Fraass, Joe Giunane, and coxswain Vince Farrussia.
In the West Side Girls Lightweight 4+ were Kathryn Gossel (Orchard Park HS/Orchard Park), Kendal Smith (The Park School of Buffalo/ East Amherst), Clare Cotter (Buffalo Seminary/Buffalo), Emma Vicaretti (Frontier HS/Blasdell), and coxswain Katie Holmwood (Williamsville East/Williamsville). In the Senior 4+ were Smith, Emily Evans (City Honors/Buffalo), Emily Radziwon (Orchard Park HS/Orchard Park), Ashley Johnson (Clarence HS/Clarence), and coxswain Claire Conrad (Buffalo Seminary/Buffalo). In the Girls Senior 8+ were Cotter, Vicaretti, Patricia Beaulieu (Lockport/Sacred Heart Academy), Erika Lister (Sacred Heart Academy/Buffalo), Evans, Smith, Radziwon, Johnson, and coxswain Conrad.
Canisius High School was the only non-West Side Campus team to win, though they won the Boys Lightweight 4+, Boys Freshman 4+ A, Boys Senior 4+, Boys Freshman 4+ B, Boys Lightweight 8+, Boys Freshman 8+, and Boys Senior 8+ medals.
Some of these teams, including the West Side Rowing Club Juniors Girls Senior 4+, will be competing in the USRowing National Championships in Sacramento California in two weeks. West Side Rowing Club will host another regatta on July 13, the 101st Annual West Side Invitational.
