SOCHI, RUSSIA - Saturday, in front of nearly 7,000 cheering, flag-waving Russian fans, Team USA beat the home team 1-0.
The Team USA sled hockey team at the Paralympics in Sochi, Russia far exceeded what the men's hockey team did in the Olympics. They played the host team from Russia for the gold medal, and came away winners.
They repeat as gold medalists.
Two Western New Yorkers will be coming home from Sochi with some shiny gold medals around their necks. Adam Page of Lancaster and Paul Schaus of Buffalo were in Sochi to help secure victory for the American team.
The only goal of the game came late in the second period. Former U.S. Marine Josh Sweeney stole the outlet pass, went in on goal, and scored to give Team USA the lead that they would never relinquish.
Team USA goaltender Steve Cash gave up one goal earlier in the tournament, his first in 313 minutes. His nickname is "Money," just like the USA sled hockey team.
