DUNKIRK, NY-- New York State Police are investigating human remains found along the shoreline of Lake Erie.
Investigators say they were notified Thursday afternoon of remains discovered along the shore at Lake Erie State Park in the Town of Portland. Portland is just south of Dunkirk in Chautauqua County.
An autopsy confirmed the remains are that of an 18-20 week old fetus. Officials believe the fetus may have separated from its mother about two or three weeks ago.
Authorities haven't determined if the fetus washed up on shore or was placed there. Officials are working to determined how long the fetus was in the water.
They would like to find the mother and learn more about her circumstances. Investigators say they have little information and are turning to the public for help. If you have any information, you're asked to call New York State Police at (716) 665-3114.
