LOCKPORT, N.Y. - It was a normal Wednesday evening at Lockport High School. The J.V. girls' basketball team was hosting Williamsville North in a scrimmage.
Superintendent of Schools Michelle Bradley says, "There were some spectators that appeared to have been involved in some disruptive behavior." That is when things got ugly.
According to police reports, security guard George Apolito approached the two teenagers, who are not students at Lockport, and ultimately asked them to leave. He was then assisted by Athletic Director Patrick Burke.
As they were escorting 18-year-old Jesse James and 16-year-old Deandre Reed out, the two teens allegedly turned and started punching Burke and Apolito repeatedly in the head and face. The two Lockport teens were pushed out of the building and police were called.
Bradley says "A random isolated fight it appears to be. We are working very closely with the Lockport Police Department investigating this. And obviously we are taking this very seriously."
Lockport Police Captain Michael Niethe tells 2 On Your Side, "They were both located on school property and they were both arrested by Lockport Police. James and Reed were brought back to the school and positively identified by the victims. They were also found to be in possession of alcohol."
Niethe was not sure whether either suspect was intoxicated, but both are charged with assault, assault-second, criminal mischief and possession of alcohol as a minor.
Superintendent Bradley says both men suffered just minor cuts and bruises and are doing well today, and while this was an isolated and unfortunate incident, the school security system worked as it should.
"I believe we work very hard in the Lockport City School District to provide a safe environment at all times, something like this we take very seriously and are very saddened."
