BUFFALO, NY – Three alarms were put out to battle a fire in a vacant house in the 700 block of East Amherst Street Thursday night. The fast-moving flames consumed the building and damaged adjacent homes.

According to Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield, a family next door was able to get out safely. The house is across the street from Westminster Community Charter School.

Whitfield said crews cannot yet determine the cause of the fire. He also said that while three-alarm fires do happen on occasion, they are fairly rare, occurring only four or five times all of last year in his estimation.
