BUFFALO, N.Y.- Canalside visitors have a new attraction to check out with the unveiling of a sculpture called 'Shark Girl'.
The sculpture is part of a collaboration between Erie County and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery to showcase works of art in public places throughout the county.
"The unveiling of 'Shark Girl' represents the next step in a burgeoning Public Art Initiative that will bring exciting, interesting, and thought-provoking public art to all corners of Erie County," Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said Tuesday.

'Shark Girl' is a mascot for artist Casey Millard, who uses the character in her sculptures, drawings and paintings. Millard says the character "searches for solace from the heartbreak of mortality."
The sculpture is 6 feet by 6 feet by 3 feet, and made of fiberglass. A seat is built into it to allow for visitors to take pictures with 'Shark Girl'.
More works under the Public Art Initiative are planned for the fall, including projects involving billboards and the creations of an "arena painting."
