BUFFALO, NY - Through Melissa's Community Baby Shower all of your generous gifts of baby supplies will go to moms and children at Haven House. It's a place where victims of domestic violence can find a new start.

29-year-old Rachel and her 18-month-old daughter Kimora are now survivors thanks to Haven House. Rachel said she was being abused by Kimora's father, and that's why she left nearly everything she owned behind to find shelter with Kimora at Haven House.

"I've never been to a battered women's shelter and I was nervous," said Rachel.

Rachel arrived around Christmas time and stayed for more than a month. She said she quickly found much more than just a room there- she found the support she needed to get back on her feet.

"There was always someone there to talk to...Maybe you felt like it would be easier to go back. There was always someone there to encourage you [not to go back.]"

Haven House relies largely on donations for their residents. Many of whom, like Rachel, arrive with almost nothing.

Through Daybreak anchor Melissa Holmes' Community Baby Shower, your gifts of diapers, wipes, bottles, onesies, and other new items will make a huge difference for Western New York's most innocent victims.

Rachel said she received donated Christmas presents for Kimora when she was staying there. That generosity from the community touched her heart.

"It was just overwhelming to see what people donate and that people in the community actually care," said Rachel.

Rachel is now caring for Kimora in their own home while still receiving counseling from Haven House, and going back to school for nursing.

"I feel great. It's really nice to not have to deal with that abuse every day and to be on my own and care for my daughter and go to school every day. It's great. I'm glad I made the decision to go to Haven House," she said.
