AMHERST, N.Y.- The effort to preserve the memory of a Western New York girl took a big step forward Monday.

The Town of Amherst approved property near the Northtown Center to become the future home of the Alix Rice skatepark.

Rice was killed in 2011 after she was hit by a car while riding her longboard home from work.

Construction of the skatepark, however, is far from assured. In addition to getting a user agreement and site plan approval, the Alix Rice foundation has only raised about a third of their fundraising goal.
