All Meals on Wheels volunteers are invaluable to the organization, but Sally Denesha goes above and beyond the call of duty, and that's why she's this week's "Good Neighbor."
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- This week's "Good Neighbor" is a generous volunteer, who doesn't just bring meals, but brings joy to others.
Sally Denesha had the same routine five days a week, for the past 15 years. She says she loves it and it's her purpose in life.
As a Meals on Wheels volunteer in Orchard Park, every weekday she picks up her cooler and oven, packs up her jeep and takes off to visit her clients.
"I just love being with them. They just have so much wisdom and they're so grateful for all that you do," Denesha said.
Denesha, a former nurse, also brings security and comfort to her clients.
"You can check on them," she said. "You can see if everything's OK. And as a nurse I pick up things."
Sally isn't just helpful to the clients, but to the whole Meals on Wheels organization.
"If it wasn't for Sally, I don't know what I'd do," said Orchard Park Meals on Wheels Site Manager Linda Voss.
She recently nominated Denesha for the Meals on Wheels "American Volunteer" contest. Denesha placed in the top 10.
"She's gone grocery shopping. She's changed lightbulbs. She's gone and got cat and dog food for our clients," said Voss. "It's above and beyond and she's just an incredible person."
The clients say the food helps their physical health, but Sally's friendship helps emotionally.
Whether you can help out five days a week like Sally or just a couple of days a month, Meals on Wheels can always use more volunteers. Click here for more information about volunteering.
