BUFFALO, NY-- Friday is the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

In France, where the allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, preparations are being made to welcome around a thousand veterans of the invasion and world leaders, including President Obama, who will pay respect to them.

The name of one of the men who landed in France 70 years ago is Joseph Pawlik.

The Western New Yorker was a member of the 82nd Airborne during the D-Day invasion. Pawlik was a highly-decorated World War II veteran. He received three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his service. He also received the French Legion of Honor Chevalier Award.

Sadly, he passed away on Monday.

2 On Your Side featured Pawlik in a story that aired in July of 2009, when he was awarded the French Legion of Honor Chevalier Award. You can watch his story in the video player below.
