BUFFALO, N.Y. - Like it or hate it, chicken wings are the first thing most people associate with Buffalo and Western New York. So embrace it- and celebrate the food's 50th birthday!

The Anchor Bar, which created the Buffalo staple back in 1964, says that Dominic Bellissimo was tending bar one night when a group of friends arrived looking for a snack. He asked his mother Theresa to make one, and she deep fried wings (which usually went into soup back then) and coated them with a secret sauce. The rest, as they say, was history...delicious, delicious history.

The restaurant that's become synonymous with the wings is celebrating them with a private party today. Other restaurants around the area will continue serving them up in ever-widening varieties, from barbecue to Italian to raspberry.

Some chicken wing facts for you, courtesy of the National Chicken Council:

  • An estimated 27 billion wings will be sold in the US in 2014
  • 1.25 billion of those were eaten during Super Bowl weekend
  • 51 percent of Americans like ranch with their wings. 32 percent prefer blue cheese.
  • 65 percent of Americans say Buffalo style wings are among their favorites, followed by 49 percent for barbecue, 35 percent for breaded, and 33 percent for teriyaki.
  • Americans get 75 percent of their wings from restaurants and food service outlets, and 25 percent from supermarkets.
