BUFFALO, NY - We're hoping you will consider donating to Melissa's Community Baby Shower, with all of the donations going to Haven House. It is the only licensed domestic violence shelter for women and children in Erie County.

"Haven House serves as a sanctuary- a respite from family violence," said Katey Joyce, director of Child and Family Services (CFS) and Haven House.

Serving in that role for more than 25 years, Joyce has seen thousands of mothers, children and expectant mothers flee to the Haven House shelter, often times with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

"Imagine the courage it takes to leave an abusive relationship when you're pregnant," said Joyce.

The location of Haven House is kept private in order to protect the safety of the families there. It serves approximately 450 residents each year- 60% of whom are children- and currently it's filled to capacity. Thousands more in WNY benefit from Haven House's non-residential services like counseling, advocacy, and safety planning. As a non-profit, CFS relies largely on donations to help the residents get back on their feet.

"When someone is on a very limited income, as most victims are because someone else has been controlling the finances, it's a heavy lift to go out and buy every single thing the baby might require," said Joyce.

Through Melissa's Community Baby Shower, donations of new items like diapers and wipes, blankets, bottles and onesies will go to Western New York's most innocent victims.

"The donations really just make the difference, even emotionally with mom. When she sees this was provided by some stranger who wants to make sure that my baby has a great start in life that my baby has what my baby needs," Joyce said.
