BUFFALO, NY - A Buffalo fire truck suffered substantial damage when the driver hit a wall in North Buffalo.
Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield confirmed for 2 On Your Side that the accident happened this month. Engine 38 firefighters were en route to a call on Jewett Parkway when the firefighter driving the pumper hit the wall when turning off Linden Avenue onto Parkside.
Whitfield said damage to the 2006 American LaFrance pumper is still be assessed, but he estimates it to be about $100,000. It has substantial front-end damage, "we're hoping it is repairable."
The driver of the rig at the time of the accident was on the job just 18-months. Commissioner Whitfield said he was experienced enough to drive the fire truck. A toxicology test was taken as part of standard operating procedures for an accident.
None of the firefighters were seriously hurt. At least one of the firefighters took off a couple of shifts.
The driver is able to work, but prohibited from driving until the investigation is done.
