The suspect in the Molly's Pub case in Buffalo is now facing the possibility of murder charges.
On Thursday, the victim in the case, William Sager, died of his injuries. Sager had been shoved down a flight of steps at the bar back in the early morning hours of May 11.
The suspect in the case, bar manager Jeffrey Basil was facing attempted murder charges, but now with Sager's death it's likely those charges will be upgraded.
Bill Sager Jr. was just 28 years old. He was engaged to be married and had his whole life ahead of him.
Instead, his family is now making funeral arrangements for him.
Sager had been in a coma at ECMC since May 11.
District Attorney Frank Sedita says the grand jury that originally indicted Basil on attempted murder charges will now meet again in the next few weeks and because Sager has died it will likely now consider homicide charges against Basil.
Sedita says security video at the bar captured the alleged assault...
"Someday the public, the people will see the video we have, we can't give it over right now it's evidence, the first time I saw it I went [reacts with horror] so the process will go forward and we will do our utmost to achieve justice on behalf of the victim's family," said Sedita.
Tony Re was one of Sager's best friends. They worked together as air national guardsmen in Niagara Falls.
On Friday Re was still wearing the "Pray For Bill" bracelet he's had on since the assault took place.
He says a planned fundraiser for Sager's family and fiancee will go on as scheduled on Sunday.
"You develop a brotherhood and it goes without saying when you're deployed and when you're friends if anything were to happen to any one of us in our close knit group, that we would know and rest peacefully knowing that our family's taken care of, so that's what we're going to do to honor him," said Re.
The fundraiser will run from 1:00 pm-6:00 pm Sunday at the VFW Hall on Grand Island.
