ALBANY"Register Now" postcards will be sent out to the 900,000 homeowners who have not re-registered for school tax relief, state Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Thomas Mattox announced Friday.

Of the 2.7 million homeowners who receive basic STAR exemption, 900,000 homeowners left who have not re-registered will receive postcards in the mail this week reminding them to register before the deadline on Dec. 31.

"We're making every effort to ensure that all eligible homeowners continue to receive their exemption," Mattox said in a statement. "We hope this postcard spurs homeowners who've not yet registered to take a few minutes so they can continue to save hundreds of dollars."

Homeowners with basic STAR exemption had to re-register this year after an investigation by the Tax Department found thousands of taxpayers receiving STAR exemption on more than one property.

Basic STAR exemption is available to homeowners who have an income of less than $500,000 and only on their primary residence.

The Tax Department has held 200 local meetings and registered thousands of people at local events, like the State Fair, in an effort to re-register homeowners.

Senior citizens who receive Enhanced STAR exemption are not effected by the registration process and do not have to re-register this year.
