TOWN OF LOCKPORT, NY - Three people were hurt and about 50 displaced from their homes when a wooden staircase collapsed in a Lockport apartment building Friday afternoon.

The apartment building at 6569 Lincoln Place, off of Lincoln Avenue, has been "temporarily condemned," we were told by the South Lockport Fire Company, at least until the Lockport building inspector can survey the damage. He was unavailable Friday.

Three people were taken to Eastern Niagara Lockport Hospital for treatment but we don't know the extent of their injuries or their current condition.

There are 12 units in the building. The American Red Cross Serving Erie and Niagara Counties issued a statement Friday night saying that said they are currently assisting 17 people from five families who were displaced by the condemnation order.

A Niagara County Sheriff's Office patrol assisted at the scene but it's not believed deputies are actively investigating the incident. No word on whether any citations or charges will be issued.

We will have more information as it becomes available here on WGRZ.com and in our newscasts.
