AMHERST, NY - No matter who you are or how old you are, there is no place like home.
This is especially true for children with life-threatening diseases where their home is their ultimate sanctuary.
Special Spaces Buffalo is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating dream bedroom makeovers for children with life-threatening illnesses all across Western New York.
Mary Cheney, 26, of Amherst, NY is a vital asset to Special Spaces, donating her time and skills to help bring these children's dreams come to life.
Cheney came to Special Spaces Buffalo to help with a single bedroom makeover in early 2013 and never left.
When asked why she made the decision to continue volunteering with Special Spaces, Cheney's response was simple:
"I get a family out of it. I get a family with all of the volunteers, and each time we do a bedroom makeover we get more family members. The most special moments are when not only the child, but the family walks into the room and you see that reaction."
Cheney's can-do attitude and her willingness to go above and beyond earned her a permanent spot on the Special Spaces Buffalo team. She spends her time contacting local businesses requesting services, money, and goods to ensure the organization continues to run. Mary also brings her social media marketing skills to the table, which enables Special Spaces Buffalo to better connect with the community and continue to bring light into children's lives.
It is for these reasons and more that Bryant & Stratton College and WGRZ-TV are proud to announce Mary Cheney and Special Spaces Buffalo as the June winners in The Great Give Back 2013 and have donated $1,000 to their cause.
