HAMBURG, N.Y.-Shortly before midnight the bus carrying the Hamburg girls softball team pulled into the school parking lot. Those on the bus were stunned to see such a big crowd to welcome them home.

The Bulldogs beat Sayville 5-3 Saturday afternoon to win the New York State Class A softball championship. For the Bulldogs it was the only acceptable way to end their season. They were driven by the season before when they lost a semifinal matchup.

Head coach Lisa Palma told Two On Your Side "We had a goal from losing in the semis last year and we set out to do it and we battled back in almost all of our playoff games. It is a tremendous feeling. I'm so excited. I'm so proud of them." Senior Bridget Hogan said "It means everything to me. I mean last year we got to the finals but we didn't make it past the first game and its just amazing to make it to the next game and win it."Starting next fall Hogan will pitch for the Niagara Purple Eagles.

As for the crowd on hand to greet them on their arrival Palma said "This is amazing principals, assistant principals, families, my students came out. They all want me to give them 100's on their economic exams on Monday. Needless to say I have to give a big shout out to my students because the last two weeks has been pretty stressful and they've been awesome." Hogan couldn't believe that so many people showed up to support the team."We honestly had no idea. We saw cops and firefighters and were like what is going on ? Then we got here and it just pumped us up even more and it was amazing to know that everyone came out and did this for us."
