BATAVIA, N.Y. -- Former Buffalo Bills players are showing their support forquarterback Jim Kelly, whoannounced publicly on Monday that he has cancer.
Kelly says he has Squamous-cell carcinoma (cancer of the upper jaw).
Kelly's former teammates werein Western New York Monday for the27th Annual Jim Kelly Celebrity Classic.
Those that spoke to 2 On Your Side say Kelly is a fighter and they are there to support him.
"It's time for the rest of us to gather around him and give him any support and strength he needs to get through his battle," says Phil Hansen, former defensive end for the Bills.
Former Bills nose tackle Fred Smerlas says Kelly is as tough as they come. "He's dealing with it great, like Jim always does. Jimmy is as touch as they come and that's why he's a great quarterback," says Smerlas.
These players don't doubt Kelly will put of a fight to beat cancer. "I'm putting my money on Jim," says former Bills special team and receiverplayer Steve Tasker. "He doesn't back down. He's got a lot of fight in him."
Kelly is scheduled to have surgery on June 7th. His course of treatment will be decided after surgery.
