AMHERST, N.Y.-Saturday afternoon at the Northtown Center in Amherst Canisius beat Clarence 1-0 in a WNY Federation Hockey game.
The Crusaders Ryan Coppins got the goal with 13:53 remaining in the third period. George Munschauer got the only assist on the goal. Clarence goaltender Devon Paluh made the original save but couldn't stop the second shot.
Canisius interim head coach Jason Bridge told Two on Your Side's Stu Boyar "we did a good job matching their intensity and energy. The difference came down to goaltending and the penalty kill." Clarence head coach Rich Brooks told Stu "we did everything we could to tie it up but we couldn't get it past their goaltender. He did a fantastic job."
It was a physical game throughout. In the first period Clarence's # 28 George Haugeto was given a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct for his hit on the Crusaders # 23 Pat Mitchell. Mitchell missed some time but was able to return to play later in the game.
For Clarence Paluh had 20 saves and for Canisius Connor Naughton stopped all 30 Clarence shots on goal.
The Crusaders next game is Thursday night at 7-pm against Niagara Wheatfield at the Northtown Center.
