Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres signed center Jochen Hecht to a one-year contract on Sunday. He didn't make it in time for the first part of the practice and get a warm reception from his teammates when he arrived at the First Niagara Center..

Hecht had four goals and four assists in 22 games for the Sabres in 2011-12. Hecht suffered a concussion in January of 2012 and missed the remainder of the season. He told the media Sunday that he was cleared to play at the end of last season. He decided to play in Germany not because of his health but because he wanted to be closer to his family.

Hecht said "There was a time during the summer where I didn't think it was going to happen but everything worked out," Hecht said. "The situations are imagined, the best one came out by returning back to Buffalo."

Acquired from Edmonton in a trade prior to the 2002-03 season, Hecht has recorded 133 goals and 198 assists in 566 regular-season games with Buffalo. He ranks 20th in franchise history in games played, goals and points.

In 786 career games with the Blues, Oilers and Sabres, Hecht has 181 goals and 268 assists. He also has 14 goals and 18 assists in 59 playoff contests.
