Sky Sports Newsreports that Sabres forward Thomas Vanek has agreed to play in Austria during the NHL lockout. Vanek is from Austria.
Vanek will play not far from where he grew, in Graz. Vanek put on his Austrian web site that "my contract ends with the league taking a break for the national team. Then I will go back to my family. We'll see how the negotiations between the league and the NHLPA are going and then I'll decided what to do next."
His contract with the Graz 99ers runs until early November but there is an out clause if the NHL lockout ends before then.
Vanek, 28, had 26 goals and 35 assists last season, his seventh with the Sabres. He is the fourth Sabres player to head overseas to play during the lockout.Christian Ehrhoff, Tyler Ennis and Andrej Sekera are the other Sabres who have decided to play in Europe during the lockout.
