TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. - It's a good bet that most Western New Yorkers don't know much about the cuisine of the old Yugoslav republics...much less have tasted it.
Thanks to a new restaurant that's only been open since around Christmas, you don't have to head to eastern Europe to try it.
The owners of Balkan Dining at Kenmore and Starin originally opened their restaurant aiming to serve the Balkan community here in Western New York. But manager Eden Asipi says they've been surprised at the large response they've gotten from non-Balkan Western New Yorkers who have come into the restaurant curious- and left satisfied.
The restaurant itself is fairly small, with only a few tables but a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The menu of unfamiliar-sounding and -looking dishes can be a little intimidating at first; Unique Eats highly recommends the mixed meat platter for newcomers. It includes a little of everything you'll want to try: Cevapi (small beef sausage links), chicken kebabs, raznjici (veal kebabs), and sudzukice (longer, spicier beef sausage), along with dipping sauces and a choice of potato.
Also recommended are the different homemade Bosnian-style pitas (stuffed with meat, cheese, spinach, and potatoes on request) and the homemade desserts (Unique Eats was a big fan of the cherry and fruit cakes).
