Thompson Gets Unanimous Decision In Win over Coyne

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.-Buffalo;s Lionell Thompson beat Ryan Coyne Saturday night in a light heavyweight matchup.

Thompson won in a unanimous decision. He landed his jab at will in the first round and was the far more active fighter.

Thompson was quicker and more elusive. Thompson staggered Coyne in the sixth round with a right to the chin. Thompson had an answer for everything Coyne did. By the fourth round Coyne's offense had all but disappeared.

Thompson cut Coyne underneath the left eye in the fifth round. He took a number of hard combinations for the Buffalo fighter.

To win Coyne needed a knockout in the final two rounds. He didn't get it. Thompson won every round to improve his record to 15-2.

Lionell Thompson won the decisive victory with scores of 99-90, 99-91, 99-91 on all three scorecards.
