Storylines heading into Bills training camp

We are two weeks away from the start of Bills Training Camp.

With a new front office, a new head coach and a trust in the process, there are plenty of storylines heading into the 2017 Bills season.

Here are three of them.

Storyline 1: Can Sammy Watkins stay healthy?

After having surgery on his foot this winter, the Bills need their #1 receiver on the field. His mere presence opens up space for LeSean McCoy and rest of the Bills offense.

Also, Buffalo is 4-0 when Watkins has at least 8 catches. It's silly to expect 8+ grabs every game but how about 90-100 receptions for the season? I think that's a fair goal.

Don't forget, Watkins is entering the final year of his contract, so he's got millions of reasons to show up in 2017.

Storyline 2: What are the Bills going to do with Adolphus Washington and Cardale Jones?

Ex-Bills GM Doug Whaley drafted both guys out of Ohio State in 2016.

Jones remains a project quarterback, as he sits fourth on the depth chart.

Washington was relatively ineffective as a rookie and he just got arrested on a weapons charge.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott preaches discipline on and off the field, so you have to wonder if Washington's days are numbered in Orchard Park.

Not to mention, the Bills front office can further separate itself from the Whaley Era by cutting Jones and Washington.

It's something to consider if neither of them play lights-out in training camp.

Storyline 3: How good (or bad) is the Bills secondary going to be?

Former #1 cornerback Stephon Gilmore is now learning the Patriot Way and safeties Aaron Williams and Corey Graham were released.

Replacing those three will be rookie cornerback Tre White, along with safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde.

Ronald Darby is the only returning starter, after a sophomore slump last season.

McDermott's system relies a bit more on zone-coverage than Rex Ryan's, but no matter what the scheme is, it's important to have lockdown cornerbacks.

I'm curious to see how the new-look secondary performs in McDermott's first year.

The first training camp practice is Thursday, July 27 at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY.
