BUFFALO, NY- T onight at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo the Sabres and Montreal Canadiens open the 2016-17. The Sabres are without Jack Eichel injured in practice Wednesday and two of there off season acquisitions.
Shortly before 6pm the Sabres announced on twitter than general manager Tim Murray has signed a contract extension.
Defenseman Dmitri Kulikov (lower body bruise) and forward Kyle Okposo (bruised knee) will also miss the game. Montreal will be without goaltender Carey Price who is sick. Ryan O'Reilly will be in the lineup for Buffalo. Tyler Ennis returns to the Sabres lineup after missing nearly all of last season with concussion issues.
1st period: Montreal scored the only goal of the period. Brendan Gallagher giving Montreal the lead. Montreal had the edge for the first part of the period. The Sabres didn't register their first shot on goal until the game was nearly 8 minutes old. Montreal outshot the Sabres 8-6 in the period. The Sabres seemed to come as the period progressed. Buffalo's best chance was an Evander Kane breakaway but Al Montoya stopped Kane's shot. Buffalo took the only 2 penalties of the first period.
2nd period: With 11 seconds remaining in the second period Sabres forward Evander Kane was helped off the ice and went right to the Sabres locker room. Kane appeared to lose an edge as he he was driving toward the corner. Trainers appeared to be looking at his shoulder. With Jack Eichel, Kyle Okposo and Dimitri Kulikov already out the last thing the Sabres need is another injury. Montreal scored the only goal of the period. The Sabres came out a little better in the second period but then Torrey Mitchell scored to make it a 2 goal lead for Montreal. The Sabres have outshot Montreal 21-to-18 after two periods.
3rd period: The Sabres say Evander Kane has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and precautionary measures. The Sabres scored the first goal of the period on the power play when Matt Moulson connected but it was pretty much all Montreal after that. They scored twice and on the second one the Sabres challenged hoping for a goaltender interference call. It didn't happen and the goal stood. The game is over. Fina score Montreal 4 Sabres 1. A long tough night for the Sabres. They were thoroughly outplayed most of the night.
