MANNHEIM, GERMANY - (wgrz.com) - Sabres forward Jochen Hecht probably won't play against his former team Tuesday night here in Germany, but he's still making the most of his time at home.
We spent some time with Hecht on Sunday afternoon after the team finished practice. He took us through the historic market section of Heidelberg, which is about 15-minutes from the house he grew up in. Hecht literally sounded like a tour guide at times... reeling off facts about the rich history of the region.
Telling us about the Heidelberg Bridge, the great castle above it, and the history of the city that dates back to before the Middle Ages.
Many of the Sabres were out for the afternoon and as they passed him asked him for advice on dining and sightseeing. He seemed totally in his element.
On the downside, Lindy Ruff all but confirmed that Hecht won't play in Tuesday night's exhibition game here against his former team as he continues to recover from a concussion. Hecht told us he thought it would still be a special evening.
"It's something I never dreamed would happen... to come here with my NHL team."
