San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The Padres on Wednesday purchased the
contract of veteran hurler Jeff Suppan from Triple-A Tucson for his first
start of the year, against the Milwaukee Brewers.
San Diego inked Suppan to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring
training back in early February. He has made two starts with Tucson this year.
Last season, the 37-year-old right-hander went 11-8 with a 4.78 earned run
average over 27 starts and one relief appearance with Kansas City's Triple-A
affiliate, the Omaha Storm Chasers.
He'll make the start in place of Cory Luebke, who was placed on the 15-day DL,
retroactive to April 28, with a strained left elbow. The 27-year-old was 3-1
with a 2.61 ERA in five starts.
In addition, the Pads transferred outfielder Kyle Blanks to the 60-day DL, in
the wake of his season-ending left-shoulder surgery performed on April 24.
