Sabres draft top-ranked European goaltender in 2nd

Sabres draft a goaltender in the second-round

CHICAGO - The Sabres needed to draft a goaltender in the draft, especially after Cal Petersen did not sign with the Sabres and will enter free agency.

GM Jason Botterill addressed that need early with their second, second-round pick on Saturday. The Sabres drafted top-ranked European goaltender, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with the 54th overall pick.

He'll most likely play in Finland for another season but thinks he has a great opportunity with the Sabres given their goalie situation now.

Luukkonen said growing up, he watched Ryan Miller and right now looks up to fellow Finnish goalie, Pekka Rinne. He also followed another Finnish player, Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen and remembers his Golden Goal at the World Junior Championship in 2014.
