The following are Dick Gallgher's observations after week 2 of the 2016 Western New York high school football season:
Maryvale, Grand Island, North Tonawanda, Iroquois, and Medina will be contenders for playoff berths.
North Tonawanda has allowed 14 points in 2 games. Their line is big and strong, the Jacks dominated the Billies and should be a force all season.
Alden and Median are the Class of B East. Alden travels to Medina in week 3 and winner should win the regular league title.
Lackawanna has been a major disappointment.
Williamsville North’s win over Kenmore West was a huge victory for the Spartans and their matchup at Clarence in week 5 could very well decide the league title. Getting the number one playoff berth in the league will be a big step toward playing at New Era Field in November. The Red Devils will be dedicating their new athletic complex on that date.
Ian Baker, Springville senior RB, has rushed for 422 yards and 9 touchdowns in only 2 games to put the Griffith en route to be a Connolly Cup finalist.
Lancaster has 2 convincing wins over Williamsville South and Jamestown. The Legends are averaging 43.5 points a game behind Ryan Mansell, Zach Samborski, and LG Castillo. Matchup with Orchard Park in week 5 should decide the regular season title.
Franklinville/Ellicottville and Maple Grove are the Class in D. The Titans and Red Dragons play in week 5 with the winner being league champion and having the number one seed for playoffs.
Dillon Janca, Orchard Park, and Jerry Hickson, St. Francis, both had strong games in week 1 and Janca in week 2. Both are likely to break some of the Joe Licata’s passing records including career passing yards.
