Dick Gallagher's Observations After Week 1

Dick Gallagher gives you his observations after week 1 of the Western New York high school football season:

Big Wins

Williamsville North over Jamestown

Bennett over West Seneca East

East Aurora/Holland over Lackawanna

Alden over Depew

Southwestern over Gowanda

St. Joes over South Park

Sweet Home with its 50 pts against Kenmore East is a playoff contender once again. With only 25 players led by JRs Ron Rivera and Joe Torrillo. The Panthers look forward to playing their first Friday Night Lights game at home against West Seneca West.

Amazing stat: Only one player, Max Giordano (Lancaster) kicked a field goal for the 1st week of the season.

Hutch Tech totally dominated St. Marys but will the Engineers be able to compete against Orchard Park in Week 2

Starpoint was one dimensional against Amherst but Soph QB Aaron Chase will get better each game.

Timons adventure to play in 3 states first 3 games didn’t start well as they planned as the tiger were dominated by the host team Buford by 40pts. Next week’s game in Ohio might not be any better as St. Francis lost to Central Catholic by 30pts.

Canisius has been under the radara season during the off season but crusaders are loaded with Burniston, Haubeil, Johnson a tremendous offensive line and defense. Can’t wait for Canisius to host St. Francis.

East Aurora/ Holland and Springville appear to be top contenders for the title in Class B South

Cheektowaga, Burgard and Maryvale appear to be the top contenders in B West

Medina and Alden should be main contenders in East

Williamsville North’s big win at Jamestown should give Spartans plenty of confidence in playing first league opponent Saturday at Kenmore West. If Hwang twins can stay healthy they will be a force all season.

Bennett will be a challenge for all teams this season after the Tigers win over West Seneca East. They have some of the top linebackers in the area. The Tigers play South Park in week 4 and Orchard Park in Week 6.
