Dick Gallagher's Commentary: Week 3

Important: Everyone should understand that no one is immune from alcoholism and/or drug addiction. If you don’t start something you don’t have to stop but today unfortunately too many of our youth are experimenting and becoming alcoholics and addicts. Many started off with cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana but are now using the opiates heroin and prescription drugs, cocaine, ecstasy and several others.

When you look at the epidemic of many of our youth dying from drug overdoses please ask yourself the following question: If a member of your family is having a problem with alcohol or drugs what are you doing to help them? Not saying anything or not helping them to get into treatment programs is called enabling and over time it becomes much harder for them to recover from their alcoholism or addiction.

If your child has an injury and the opiates are prescribed, make sure parents monitor the usage and give the pills when required to your child. Too many physicians prescribe more than what is necessary and parents should not let their children handle the medication. For more information contact Kids Escaping Drugs/Renaissance Campus at 827-9462. The faster parents get help for their children provides them with a better chance of recovery.
