Cambridge beats Maple Grove in state final, 22-21/2OT

Maple Grove's season comes to an end in heartbreaking fashion, a 22-21 double overtime loss to Cambridge in the Class D championship game.

 SYRACUSE, NY-  It was a heart breaking end to a fantastic season for Maple Grove. The Red Dragons lost to Cambridge 22-21 in double overtime in the Class D New York State Championship game.


Cambridge scored first and led 6-0 after the first quarter. The Red Dragons scored twice in the second quarter and the game was tied at halftime 14-14.

It stay that way until the second overtime. 

Nick Fabrizio scored all 3 Maple Grove touchdowns. His first score, a 9 yard run  tied the game at 6. The second touchdown, a 2 yard run,  tied the game at 14 and the third one another 2 yard run gave Maple Grove the lead in the second overtime. 

The Red Dragons couldn't hold it as the Indians converted a 4th and 10 in the second overtime to set up a touchdown. Maurice Seymour scored from 8 yards out and the game came down to the extra point.  With Maple Grove leading 21-20 Indians coach Doug Luke went for the win and got it. 

Quarterback Zack Rowland hit Shawn Lemiuex in the end zone for the two point conversion and Maple Grove's bid for a third state championship was denied.  The Indians walked out of the Carrier Dome with a thrilling 22-21 double overtime win and the Class D championship. 

For Maple Grove Brad Benson had 23 carries for 139 yards. Benson was playing on a heavily taped ankle that he injured in last week's semifinals. Nick Fabrizio had 15 carries for 89 yards and Dalton Dubois ran for 17 yards on 13 carries. Dubois was returning from an ankle injury suffered in the Section 6 championship game at New Era Field. Dubois completed just 3 of 11 passes for 63 yards. He was intercepted in the end zone in the third quarter. 

Maple Grove ran 53 times for 250 yards. Cambridge ran 49 times for 196 yards. 

Maple Grove finishes the season with a record of 12-1. Cambridge completes its perfect season at 13-0.
