Reggie Witherspoon leaving WNY for job at Alabama

AMHERST, N.Y.- Former UB men's basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon is headed down south to the land of the Tide.

Witherspoon has accepted a position as an assistant basketball coach for the University of Alabama. He announced the decision at his home in Amherst on Wednesday.

Witherspoon coached the University at Buffalo for 14 years but never made the NCAA Tournament, ultimately leading to his termination in March 2013.

'Spoon, as he's known around town, has spent his entire coaching career in Western New York. He coached at Sweet Home High School, then Erie Community College, before landing at UB in 1999.

Alabama head coach Anthony Grant is a big reason behind Witherspoon's decision. Grant's aggressive, high-pressure defense appeals to 'Spoon, who will make the jump from MAC to SEC athletics.
