Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - In a low scoring bout between the two
bottom teams of the Summit League, the UMKC Kangaroos defeated the IUPUI
Jaguars, 48-44, at the Jungle in the regular season finale.
UMKC (8-23, 5-11 Summit) was led by Thomas Staton who scored 14 points as the
Kangaroos ended a four-game losing streak. Nelson Kirksey added 11 points and
six rebounds while making good on both of his attempts from beyond the arc.
IUPUI (6-25, 1-15) suffered its 15th consecutive loss despite a 19-point,
seven-rebound, five-block performance supplied by Mitchell Patton. Sean
Esposito added 10 points and six rebounds but shot just 4-of-13 from the
field.
After holding UMKC to just 37.0 percent shooting from the field in the first
half, the Jaguars led 27-26 at halftime.
In the second half the Kangaroos shot even worse from the floor, hitting on
just 26.0 percent of their shots, but were able to take advantage of their
opportunities at the free-throw line and made 9-of-10 attempts to outscore
IUPUI 22-17 and grab the win
Both teams struggled from the floor in the game but UMKC earned its edge with
a 36-29 rebounding advantage.
