Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Treveon Graham led the way with 19 points, as
the Virginia Commonwealth Rams used a decisive run to open the second half to
take down the Massachusetts Minutemen, 86-68, in an Atlantic 10 Conference
matchup at the Siegel Center.
For the Rams (20-5, 8-2 A-10), Melvin Johnson added 18 points and Rob
Brandenberg chipped in with 12 points.
Raphael Putney led the Minutemen (16-7, 6-4) with a double-double of 19 points
and 10 rebounds, while Freddie Riley finished with 12 points. Chaz Williams
scored just six points on 1-of-7 from the field but tallied nine rebounds and
seven assists.
UMass opened the game with the hot hand, connecting on 51.7 percent of its
field goal tries in the first half, including 5-of-12 from beyond the 3-point
arc, as it went into halftime ahead, 42-37. VCU was held to just 36.8 percent
shooting in the opening frame.
The Rams opened the second half on a 21-1 run to take control of the game, and
they led by double-digits the rest of the way.
VCU forced 24 UMass turnovers and converted them into 28 points.
