Champaign, IL (Sports Network) - Ben Brust scored 20 points to lead the way as
the Wisconsin Badgers completed a season series sweep of the Illinois
Fighting Illini with a 74-68 victory in a Big Ten Conference battle at
Assembly Hall.
Frank Kaminsky added 19 points in 23 minutes off the bench for Wisconsin
(15-7, 6-3 Big Ten). Ryan Evans also got into the mix and just missed a
double-double after finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Joseph Bertrand led five players in double-figures for Illinois (15-8, 2-7)
with 17 points. Nnanna Egwu contributed 14 points and seven rebounds and
Brandon Paul netted 13 points. D.J. Richardson and Tracy Abrams posted 10
points apiece as the Fighting Illini dropped their third consecutive decision.
Both sides got off to a slow start. Illinois made only 29.6 percent of its
field goal attempts, including only 1-of-4 from beyond the arc in the first
half. Brust, who came in averaging 10.3 points per game, tallied 13 points in
the first half while Wisconsin shot 35.5 percent from the floor en route to a
33-24 halftime lead.
The scoring really picked up after the break as the Fighting Illini heated up
to connect on 54.1 percent of their field goal tries. The Badgers stayed in
front for the entire frame by going 10-of-18 from the floor and 19-of-31 at
the charity stripe.
Illinois outscored the Badgers, 36-24, in the paint, but it also committed 27
foul while Wisconsin was called for just 16. The discrepancy in free throw
attempts helped the visitors hold a 28-10 edge in foul line scoring.
