Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Gary Talton scored 19 points, one of Illinois-
Chicago players in double-figures, as the Flames defeated the Youngstown State
Penguins 65-60 in Horizon League action at the UIC Pavilion.
Talton also dished out a game-high six assists for the Flames (10-4, 1-0
Horizon), who happily saw their three-game losing steak end. Hayden Humes (15
points, seven rebounds), Josh Crittle (14 points, seven rebounds, four
assists, two blocks), and Daniel Barnes (10 points, seven rebounds) were the
three other UIC players in double-figures.
Kendrick Perry was 7-of-12 from the field for 19 points with nine rebounds,
while also leading three teammates in double-figures for the Penguins (8-6,
0-1), whose two-game winning streak came to a close. Blake Allen recorded a
double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Kamren Belin scored 11
points and DJ Cole added 10.
The game was even at 29-29 going into halftime after both teams shot under
40.0 percent from the field in the first period.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle that saw the Flames outscore YSU
36-31. After Allen hit a 3-pointer with 1:31 remaining to put the Penguins
on top, 60-50, the Flames closed out the game on a 15-0 run. Talton hit a 3-
pointer with 17 seconds left to give the Flames back the lead and then made
three more shots from the free-throw line for UIC to take the 65-60 conference
win.
The Flames managed a 42-33 rebounding edge and flipped 14 YSU turnovers into
19 points.
