New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Sean Armond scored 17 points to lead the
Iona Gaels as they defeated the Fairfield Stags, 77-72, in a Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference bout at the Hynes Center.
Mike Glover finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks as Iona
(23-6, 14-3 MAAC) won its fourth game in a row. Scott Machado added 10 points
and dished out seven assists.
Rakim Sanders paced Fairfield (17-12, 12-5) with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Ryan Olander added 15 points as the Stags lost for the second time in three
games.
Fairfield took a 38-33 lead into halftime after it shot 43.8 percent from the
field and connected on 7-of-16 attempts from three-point range in the opening
period. The Gaels were cold to start the game, and they made just 1-of-6 from
beyond the arc in the first half.
Iona was on fire after the break as it drained 72.7 percent of its field goals
including 4-of-4 from three-point range in the second half. Although the Stags
shot 50 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes, it was not enough to
sustain the Gaels' incredible offensive outburst. The conference foes went
back and forth and the lead changed hands 11 times after halftime. The hosts
took the lead for good with 5:57 left to play as Armand scored nine points in
a row for Iona in a three and a half minute span, while Fairfield managed just
one layup during that time.
Despite the loss, Fairfield held a 37-25 advantage in the rebounding battle.
The Stags committed 18 turnover, which doubled Iona's total of nine turnovers.
