Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Kevin Van Wijk scored a game-high 18 points
to lead the Valparaiso Crusaders to a 71-59 triumph over the Butler Bulldogs
in the Horizon League regular season finale for both teams at the Athletics-
Recreation Center.
Will Bogan added 14 points for Valpo (21-10, 14-4 Horizon), while Ben Boggs
netted 11 points. Ryan Broekhoff pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the
Crusaders.
Khyle Marshall paced Butler (17-13, 11-7) with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting
from the floor. Andrew Smith chipped in 12 points while Ronald Nored scored 11
points and handed out eight assists. The loss snapped the Bulldogs' five-game
winning streak.
Valpo took a 31-21 lead into the intermission after it hit 44 percent of its
field goals in the opening period. The Bulldogs struggled in the first half,
as they could only connect on 29.6 percent of their field goals and just 1-
of-6 from three-point range.
Butler heated up after the break and shot 46.4 percent from the floor in final
20 minutes. However, the Crusaders stayed in front by converting 20-of-25 from
the charity stripe in the second half.
Free throw shooting played a role in the outcome, as Valpo made 26-of-33 from
the charity stripe in the contest while the Bulldogs went 13-of-22 from the
foul line.
