Boca Raton, FL (Sports Network) - Mychal Ammons registered a career-high 26
points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the South Alabama Jaguars to a 79-76
overtime win in a Sun Belt Conference affair at FAU Arena.
Augustine Rubit finished with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds to
help pace South Alabama (16-10, 8-7 SBC) while Freddie Goldstein and Trey
Anderson logged 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Greg Gantt scored 21 points to lead the way for FAU (11-17, 7-8), which also
got 20 points from Shavar Richardson and 12 points from Dennis Mavin off the
bench.
FAU limited the Jaguars to an underwhelming 42.9 percent from the field during
the opening period of play to earn a 35-30 halftime advantage.
The Jaguars battled back in the second stanza and took a 63-56 lead with
4:40 left following a 14-2 run. The Owls, however, responded with a 9-2 spurt
to tie things up at 65-65 with just over a minute and a half remaining on the
clock. The Jaguars regained the lead at the charity stripe with 47.6 left to
play, but Gantt hit a pair of free-throws of his own at the 20.2 mark to force
an extra session.
The Jaguars then kept the Owls in check to the tune of 33.3 percent from the
field during overtime to escape with a three-point win.
The Owls forced a game-high 18 turnovers during the meeting, but they lost the
battle of the boards by a 41-30 margin.
