(bisons.com)-It was a pitchers dual between the Bisons' P.J. Walters and the PawSox' Anthony Ranaudo on Sunday afternoon.
Yet, an infield single by the PawSox prolonged the sixth inning and was allowed Travis Shaw to launch a go-ahead, three-run homer. The home run was just enough as Pawtucket held on for a 3-2 victory over the Bisons at McCoy Stadium.
Walters retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The PawSox touched Walters for all three runs with two outs. Walters got the first two outs of the sixth before Andres Torres hit a two-out single. Will Middlebrooks then followed with a slow dribbler to third base and Andy LaRoche couldn't throw out Middlebrooks in time for an infield single. Shaw made the Bisons pay with the three-run homer.
The Bisons couldn't solve Ranaudo, who allowed just one run, on three hits in six and ⅔ innings of work. The Bisons scored its lone run on a solo homer off the bat of Kevin Pillar in the top of the sixth inning. Pillar's home run broke a scoreless tie, but the PawSox responded with Shaw's home run in bottom half of the sixth.
Pillar went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and had three of the Bisons four hits. The Bisons went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left four on base. Ranaudo lowered his ERA to 2.54, which is second-best in the International League.
Walters went six innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out six and walking one. It was a bounce back outing for Walters, who was coming off two of his worst outings of the season, allowing six runs on July 7 and seven runs on July 12.
The Bisons will look to snap its seven-game losing skid as they head to Lehigh Valley for a brief two-game series on Monday, before making a trip back to Buffalo for the start of 10-game homestand. Liam Hendriks (7-1, 2.19 ERA) will pitch for the Bisons on Monday, while David Buchanan (5-1, 3.98 ERA) will start for Lehigh Valley. Hendriks is coming off an outing in the Triple-A All-star Game where the Bisons' right-hander earned the win in the International League's 4-0 win over the Pacific Coast League. Hendriks was named MiLB.com's "Top Star" after tossing two shutout innings, while striking out four.
